Stainless Steel Pipe & Tube for Pharmaceutical Applications

Pharmaceutical process differs from general chemical duty in one decisive respect: the surface matters as much as the alloy. A grade that resists the process chemistry perfectly is still unsuitable if its internal finish harbours product residue or cannot be cleaned and verified.

What drives material selection here

Grades commonly specified

Grade selection guidance for this service. Confirm against your own process conditions.
Grade Why it is specified
316L The sector standard. Low carbon for weld-zone integrity, molybdenum for resistance to chlorides in process fluids and cleaning agents.
304L Utility services -- plant steam, non-product water -- where 316L would be over-specified.

Standards this sector commonly specifies

These are the specifications buyers in this sector typically call for. Material is supplied against the specification stated on your order — confirm the standard and certificate type at enquiry stage. See mill test certificates and EN 10204 types.

Worth knowing before you specify

Specify the finish as a measured value. "Polished" is not a specification; an Ra limit in µm or µin is. Internal finish, external finish and whether electropolishing is required are three separate decisions and each affects price and lead time. Tell us all three.

Tell us the duty, not just the grade

The fastest route to a useful quotation is the service conditions. For this application that means:

  • Required internal Ra and external finish
  • Whether electropolishing is required
  • Tube OD and wall, not NPS
  • Certification and traceability requirements
