Exhaust duty combines two attacks that do not usually occur together: high temperature and oxidation at the hot end, and acidic condensate corrosion at the cool end, with thermal cycling driving both. The section nearest the tailpipe often corrodes first, because that is where condensate collects and sits between journeys.
| Grade | Why it is specified |
|---|---|
| 304 / 304L | The common choice for performance and replacement exhaust work. Good heat and oxidation resistance with the formability bending requires. |
| 316 / 316L | Where road salt or coastal exposure is severe, or where the system is expected to outlast the vehicle. |
| 321 | Headers and manifolds in sustained high-temperature service, where stabilisation against sensitisation matters. |
These are the specifications buyers in this sector typically call for. Material is supplied against the specification stated on your order — confirm the standard and certificate type at enquiry stage. See mill test certificates and EN 10204 types.
